Events and Happenings – May 6, 2021

Miltonvale Park – May 6, 2021

Summer Jobs – The Municipality received Post Secondary Student Funding (must have been a full-time post-secondary student last year and planning to return to school in the fall) and Canada Summer Jobs (15-30, not necessarily a student) funding for positions at the Community Park and the Municipal Council Office this summer. If there are youth in the municipality looking for a summer position, please contact the Council office at admin@miltonvalepark.com, as soon as possible.

Regular Development Office Hours – Michael Olubiyi is in the office at the Milton Community Hall on Wednesdays to receive development application forms or answer development questions. He works for Miltonvale Park from 9 a.m. -2 p.m. on Wednesdays until fall – but may be out in the municipality visiting properties. Take your chances or make an appointment by calling the office at 902-368-3090 or email develop@miltonvalepark.com.

Official Plan Update – All the information regarding the Official Plan and Bylaw Review is available on a page on the municipal website. The most recent versions of the draft Official Plan and Development Bylaws are at the bottom of that page. The documents are undergoing legal review and should be ready for Planning Board (PB)and Council to begin the process for adoption at their next meetings – PB on Wednesday, May 12 at 6:30 and Council on Wednesday, May 19 at 7:30. Please pre-register by noon on the meeting day if you wish to attend either meeting to admin@miltonvalepark.com or 902-368-3090.

The Annual WI Roadside Clean Up takes place on Saturday May 8 and the Province will be picking up the yellow or clear bags beginning Monday, May 10. There were some yellow bags left at the blue community signboards by the community mailboxes on the Crabbe Road, the North York River Road and at the Community Hall. Extra bags are also available at the hall. For safety, folks are reminded to wear gloves and tuck pant legs into rubber boots as it is apparently tick season on PEI. Islanders can use their own clear bags for the clean up, but the special WI bags are only to be used for the clean up. Waste carts that have these bags in them will be rejected.

The North Milton WI are having guest speakers David and Lucille Thompson talk about a trip they had taken to the South Pacific on Monday, May 10 at the Milton Hall at 8 p.m. If you would like to attend the meeting, please RSVP to  miltoncommunityhall@gmail.com.

The Cornwall and Area Watershed Meeting is taking place at the Milton Community Hall on Tuesday, May 11 from 6-8 pm. Community Sponsors have donated food and beverages for the event: Mary’s Cornwall Bakery, Cornwall Pizza Delight and Deep Roots Distillery

Guest speakers are Gwen Vessey  P.Ag, CCA) to present on the Agri-watershed Fund and Matthew McIver, a Forest and Wildlife Technician, to talk about maintaining the value of your marginal lands and wet forests. There will also be elections to the board of directors and executive. Public Health and Safety regulations will apply, seating is limited, masks are mandatory. Please RSVP to Cornwall_watershed@yahoo.ca.

A recent video added to the Facebook pages (Rural Municipality of Miltonvale Park and the Milton Community Hall) include the very informative presentation on gardening by Heidi Riley on May 5, as part of the Year of Summer funded by the New Horizons for Seniors Program. They are set up so that you do not have to have a Facebook account to see the video. We expect to soon upload a video of Jessie Inman’s tall ship trip to Antarctica.

Resident Craig Mackie is going to lead Beginner Tai Chi classes on Monday and Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. from May 17 -June 10 at the Milton Community Hall. As space is limited, please contact the Council office ASAP if you would like to attend. This is also a part of the Year of Summer project. Classes will be free for Miltonvale Park residents aged 55+, and they will have priority for the class registration until May 11th. Registration for others, if space is available, will be $15 for the 8-class session.

Leone Curtis is now leading Mat Yoga on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. and Chair Yoga on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 and Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. The cost is $5 and if you would like to attend chair yoga you can register here.  Contact the Council office if you are interested in the mat yoga.

We still have quite a few fabric face masks at the Council Office for residents – Residents are encouraged to drop by and pick one up! There are also books to borrow, and a food supply cupboard if you need items such as canned meats, snacks, toilet paper, toothpaste, juice, jam, peanut butter, cheese whiz… and disposable masks and gloves.

The Lobster Take Out is now sold out. If you would like to volunteer for the event on May 15th (with prep work happening through the week and on Fri. May 14), please email the hall at miltoncommunityhall@gmail.com.

The municipality received funding through ParticipACTION (funded by the Government of Canada) to participate in the Community Better Challenge, in which municipalities encourage residents to be active during the month of June. We will be holding several special events such as an outdoor learn to line dance, and a walk and bicycle ride. The main event will be a virtual community walk to Miltonvale, Kansas. Watch for details on how you can participate! People are encouraged to download an app from PartcipACTION. The free ParticipACTION app is a fun, and evidence-informed tool that empowers you on your physical activity journey no matter where you live, work, or play! You can win prizes from using the app.

The deadline to nominate a Miltonvale Park resident for the Volunteer of the Year is Friday, June 4. Check the website for more information.

The Young At Heart Musical Theatre will be presenting Fascinating Maritime Ladies at the Milton Hall on Saturday afternoon, June 12. More details to follow.

Summer Job: Students who may be interested in working for the hall are asked to reach out to the hall miltoncommunityhall@gmail.com.

Requests for proposals to build and install a dog ramp at the community park are being accepted until May 10, 2021. Contact the Council Office for more information if you are interested.

Congratulations to those residents (age 55+) who won PEI National Park Passes through the Year of Summer New Horizons for Seniors Program.
